The exporters selling price, |
As an importer, you should determine the exporters price and which elements of the transport costs are included in that price. |
This is usually indicated by the trading term of the exporter quotation immediately after the selling price. Its important to know which trading term is quoted because it represents significant differences in the exporters selling price. |
To simplify the most common trading terms, I will use only the two terms that have major relevance to you (The Importer) |
FOB (Free on Board) is one of the most common trading terms and put simply, just means that the cost of the materials, plus the loading of the materials on board the vessel. |
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) is probably the trading term that you will be mostly interested in, as it represents the price of the materials, the loading of the materials onto the vessel, freight to your port of choice and insurance as well. |
So firstly we must negotiate a price that is budget friendly FOB and then we will negotiate a CIF price that is tailor made to your port of destination. |
Remember that once the contracts are signed and the deposit is paid, the manufacturer then assembles your order and then commission’s a freight handler to get your materials to your destination of choice upon payment of the outstanding balance of funds. |

It is now time to invest in a forwarding agent from your country of business to have the materials released and in doing this all local charges that are incurred along the way will be paid. These charges will include Clearing charges, Customs Duty, Goods and Services Tax, Fumigation charges and other charges depending on your country of destination. |
These costs are generally paid by the Importer (You) and on average would represent 2-5% of your total costs. |
